In god of war 3, how is it that kratos can kill the gods when he is mortal?

so i just got god of war 3, AWESOME btw, and im wondering in the first game he went through a a lot so he could gain the power to just kill ares. but now he is just killing them left and right. i know athena died by the blade but this time he is just killing them with his bare hands.
