When do you use estar and when do you use ser?

we a writing an in cl story, and you know that means you have to use both preterite and imperfect, and i found my self saying estaba a lot buth when i was studying oline i dont really remember using estaba on practice quizes, only era. How do i know when to use estar and ser, in say a story about a party?
